The "office siren" corporate aesthetic is taking over TikTok, but it isn't necessarily new. It blends high-fashion corporate looks with '90s and 2000s vintage charm — fitting for Gen Z, which can't get enough of the Y2K era. The office siren look is bold red lips, pencil skirts, stilettos, turtlenecks, chunky jewelry, and tons of neutrals and blacks. She said the office siren aesthetic began taking off around the same time, coincidentally when she decided to post her outfits that aligned with the trend. "The office siren look is something that largely started in the office," Dwyer said.

London CNN —A British wildlife park has hatched a new plan to rehabilitate its potty-mouthed parrots after they unleashed a tide of expletives. Back in 2020, five foul-mouthed African gray parrots, donated to Lincolnshire Wildlife Park in eastern England, were isolated from the flock in an attempt to improve their language. “We’ve put eight really, really offensive, swearing parrots with 92 non-swearing ones,” he said. If the new strategy works, the eight parrots could learn “all the nice noises like microwaves and vehicles reversing” that the other parrots in the flock favor, Nichols added. In fact, historically, “we did hear a lot more customers swearing at parrots than we did parrots swearing at customers,” Nichols said.

PARIS (AP) — Dior's menswear maestro Kim Jones transformed a sunny afternoon in Paris into a starlit evening of balletic grandeur at Paris Fashion Week, in a display of fashion theatrics. Inspired by the legendary ballet icons Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, Jones delivered an exuberant spectacle at the Ecole Militaire annex on Friday. Amid the haunting melodies of Sergei Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” the collection intertwined Dior’s fine tailoring with a joyful explosion of theatrical glamour. JUNYA WATANABE’S THRIFT-SHOP CHICJunya Watanabe unveiled a collection that was a masterful blend of eerie mood-setting and aggressive urban fashion. The clothes featured a mix of traditional tailoring and streetwear elements, a nod to his 2001 debut when he first merged high fashion with everyday wear.

Old World Young Africa As the world grays, Africa blooms with youth. The World Is Becoming More African Part one of a series on how the youth boom is changing the continent, and beyond. But while a handful of African countries are poised to ride the demographic wave, others risk being swamped by it. In the West, racists and right-wing nationalists stoke fears of African population growth to justify hatred, or even violence. The age gap between geriatric leaders and restless youth is “a major source of tension” in many African countries, said Simon Mulongo, a former African Union diplomat from Uganda.

Assess the RoomStart by asking yourself some questions, Ms. Romanek suggested: “What is the feeling I want in this room? Orcas were spotted hunting dolphins off the coast of San Diego, in a graphic new drone video. This behavior is normal, especially since this pod of killer whales specializes in eating dolphins. Killer whales eat a meat-based diet, but the prey they choose depends on what part of the world they live in. So, for the orcas that cruise the area, eating dolphins is about a combination of opportunity and interest, Marino explained. “Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s staggering film about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man known as “the father of the atomic bomb,” condenses a titanic shift in consciousness into three haunted hours. The movie is based on “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” the authoritative 2005 biography by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The atomic bomb and what it wrought define Oppenheimer’s legacy and also shape this film. “Oppenheimer” is a great achievement in formal and conceptual terms, and fully absorbing, but Nolan’s filmmaking is, crucially, in service to the history that it relates. The story tracks Oppenheimer — played with feverish intensity by Cillian Murphy — across decades, starting in the 1920s with him as a young adult and continuing until his hair grays.

Hot pink made waves when Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli released her own iteration, called “Shocking pink,” in the mid-1930s. The original Barbie doll didn’t even wear pink when it first debuted in 1959, wearing, instead, a black and white chevron bathing suit. Barbie’s pink shades evolved over the years, and in 2008 the vibrant “Barbie Pink” became an official Pantone color. Gifty Walker, Joybird’s director of merchandising and sourcing in Los Angeles, noted that Joybird had a hot pink couch that was popular in 2016. Now hot pink is back and customers are using it to eschew traditional neutrals like grays, browns, and tans.

President Biden has declared “the battle between democracy and autocracy” to be the defining struggle of his time. But when he rolls out the red carpet on the South Lawn of the White House for Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India on Thursday morning, Mr. Biden will effectively call a temporary truce. In granting Mr. Modi a coveted state visit, complete with a star-studded gala dinner, Mr. Biden will shower attention on a leader presiding over democratic backsliding in the world’s most populous nation. At a time of confrontation with Russia and an uneasy standoff with China, Mr. Biden is being forced to accept the flaws of America’s friends. Even some of his top advisers privately view the construct as too black-and-white in a world of grays.

Around 30 killer whales were spotted playing in Monterey Bay for more than eight hours on Sunday. Six of the whales were also captured in April attacking adult gray whales in a rare encounter. "It was the best killer whale encounter I've had and I've been studying them for 30 years," Nancy Black, a marine biologist with Monterey Bay Whale Watch and director of the nonprofit California Killer Whale Project, told Insider. Monterey Bay Whale Watch said the gray whales ultimately survived the attack but were badly injured. The unusual playful display comes as killer whales near Spain and Portugal have increasingly been damaging and even sinking boats.

How to See an Owl Like Flaco - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2023-06-07 | by ( Jennifer Ackerman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The ear tufts of some species disrupt the round identifiable shape of an owl head, so it blends better with its woody surroundings. The quiet flight of owls is an act of biomechanical stealth that still challenges science. I once experienced the stealth of a great gray owl up close. I could barely make him out against the tree bark, and even in this enclosed space, his partner was invisible. Google “owl silent flight,” and you’ll find a dramatic video of an experiment by BBC Earth some years ago comparing the flight noise of a pigeon, a peregrine falcon and a barn owl.

The text in one post sharing the claim (here) reads, “A Single Exposure to Ultrasound Causes DNA Damage Similar to 250 Chest X-Rays” overlayed on an ultrasound image of a fetus. A URL printed across the fetus image leads to an article (here) that makes unfounded claims about the risk of fetal ultrasound, and cites a 1981 study for the “250 chest x-rays” figure. The 1981 study did not draw any such conclusion. In response to a request for comment, the author of the article Jeanice Barcelo said she stands by her claim about the 1981 study. A 1981 study of mouse cells in test tubes did not conclude that ultrasound caused DNA damage equivalent to that of hundreds of x-rays, and extensive research finds ultrasound to be safe for use during pregnancy.

In his dark, silent study down the hall at Bethel Baptist, on a shelf stuffed with old theological books, is a photograph of the 1948 pennant celebration of the Birmingham Black Barons of baseball’s Negro leagues. Greason, 98, is one of baseball’s “forgotten heroes,” according to the Center for Negro League Baseball Research. And the last time they met, the Yankees and the Dodgers didn’t even look the part. The Yankees ripped through the past month, winning 19 of 29 games before Friday and constructing the best record in Major League Baseball since May 2. The trip is the first big test for Kendall and Roman, who spend the first part of this episode scrutinizing emails and complaining about keeping the numbers straight across five Waystar divisions. Gerri though, on the plane ride over, encourages her people not to be so worried about these smug Swedes. Matsson pledged to buy Waystar Royco (minus ATN) for $144 a share. In a private meeting with Matsson, Kendall casts a steely eye on him and remains unfazed even when the flighty tech billionaire makes a snide comment about Waystar’s sliding stock price. So ends Round 1 of this negotiation, with Matsson slightly ahead, if only because he asked for something Kendall and Roman were not prepared to give.
